Office equipment – You need to work from home because you don’t have the office equipment to do so. Whether it’s a fax machine or a computer, you need to make sure you have what you need. Whether you use the office equipment at your place of employment or if you rent it, this is something that you will need to buy for yourself as well as for anyone who might use it. Even if you’re on a tight budget, this is one of the most important things you need to work from home.
A telephone – Now, whether you use a landline or a cell phone, you will need a telephone. Depending on where you work, you may even need to bring your cell phone in from the car. The number of landlines that people use in their homes is dwindling quickly, so the number of home office equipment and telephone landlines you need will be higher. In addition, if you have a home office, you’ll want to consider renting a telephone for yourself as well.
Internet access – This is not always something that people think about when they are thinking about the things they need to work from home. In order to send and receive an email, you need to have an internet connection. It may be free at your place of employment, but if not, you’ll be spending money. Be sure that you keep the bill in writing so you know exactly what you are spending each month.
An effective printer – Last, you need to have an effective printer in your home. You don’t want to wait until you run out of ink to print documents. Also, you need to make sure that you keep the maintenance to a minimum. If you do it wrong, by the time you realize it, the damage has been done. In order to avoid costly mistakes, be sure that you invest in a good printer.
Computer hardware – Now, depending on what you use for your home office, you will need different hardware. For example, if you are primarily using a computer for email and spreadsheets, you’ll probably need a computer desk that is computer safe. If you use your computer as a place to work such as proofreading manuscripts, you will most likely need shelving for books and stationery. If you plan to start a business from home, you will most likely need a phone system and maybe even a fax machine. Other things you may need include a printer, fax, copier, scanner, or other types of software.
Office supplies – These are some things you need to work from home that is often overlooked. However, you want to make sure that you stock up on these items well in advance, especially if you plan to expand your home office. For example, if you plan on opening a bookstore from your home, you will need a lot of basic office supplies such as whiteboards, markers, envelopes, and other office stationery. If you plan on doing graphic design for websites from your home, you will need special equipment such as color printers, adhesives, tapes, and more. The bottom line is that if you can afford it, purchase a complete set of office supplies in order to ensure that you never run out.
Office politics – Finally, it helps if you know how to deal with office politics. This includes making sure that everyone in your home understands what you’re doing and that they cooperate with you. It doesn’t matter what you are working on at first; it helps if everyone can understand what you are doing at some point so that everyone can contribute to the success of the business. Therefore, make sure that you work on having excellent communication skills with all members of your team.
