Income Inflation and Global Warming

Global warming is one of the many environmental issues that environmental advocates and the greens are up against. While there is a lot of agreement on the necessity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there is also some disagreement on how best to do this. Some environmentalists have called for a “territory-based” system, which would entail developing countries get financial support from developed nations in order to reduce their carbon footprints. Activists have called for major multinational companies to “Shift Gears” and help fund social organizations that are committed to combating the growing global warming crisis. Unfortunately, global warming and income inequality appear to be related.

There appears to be a link between the two issues. While it is not possible to state with certainty that global warming or its adverse effects directly caused income disparity, that income disparity continues to grow amid rising energy costs casts doubt on the validity of the argument. The internet revolution has provided people with more information and more ways to communicate than ever before. This explosion in communications has provided a medium through which they can discuss social issues. In the past, people were too disconnected to take part in the social conversations that were shaping social issues or they didn’t have the resources to engage in those conversations. Today, however, people can exchange ideas, information, and social strategies online in actual time.

The increasing complexity of the internet and how people interact have also increased the need to develop open-access social networks. These networks need to provide better tools for people to understand and take part in social discussions online. It is also important to provide social platforms that promote accountability and transparency in the processes and activities of social organizations. If they do not take these issues care of, then we are facing a future of widespread global warming and the attendant rise in poverty and social inequality.
